Leading a Legacy of Healthy Futures
Celebrating the ongoing impact of Dr. Allan Markin, a vision that sparked a movement
In 2007, Allan Markin laid the foundation for a movement that would transform the health and well-being of children across Alberta and beyond. As a visionary philanthropist and champion of preventative health, his initial $5 million investment launched APPLE Schools—a program dedicated to building lifelong healthy habits in vulnerable school communities.
Over time, that investment grew to over $16 million, fueling a mission that continues to expand today—proving that when you invest in children’s health, you invest in the future.

Allan’s passion for APPLE Schools was sparked by a troubling trend: too many children were not getting the nutrition they needed to grow and thrive. The 2014 REAL Kids Alberta evaluation found that fewer than half of Grade 5 students ate the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables, and many were consuming high amounts of sugar and processed foods—habits that put their long-term health at risk. For Allan, this was a call to action. His vision was clear: equip children with the knowledge and environments they need to eat well, live well, and reach their full potential.
“I wanted to inspire something that could truly make a difference in the lives of kids — a program where results were not just promised but proven. Through healthy eating, active living, and evidence-based research, APPLE Schools has shown measurable improvements in health outcomes like reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes. My hope is that by fostering healthy habits early, students will have greater opportunities to achieve their dreams — whatever they may be — and grow into the best versions of themselves.”

Growth Fueled by Passion and Leadership
Thanks to Allan’s founding support and enduring commitment, what began in 10 Edmonton area schools has grown into a province-wide and national initiative impacting 108 school communities.
- By 2011: Expanded to northern Alberta
- By 2019: Reached 21,000+ children and youth in four provinces
- By 2024: Added six Ontario schools and expanded into southern Alberta—thanks to a partnership with the Calgary Flames Foundation, championed by Dr. Markin

Remarkably, the original 10 APPLE school communities remain part of the program today—proof that what started as a bold investment in 2007 has evolved into a lasting movement that still shapes lives every day.
Allan’s contribution extends far beyond funding. As a member of the APPLE Schools Foundation Board of Directors, he continues to provide mentorship, guidance, and advocacy. His leadership has inspired countless others to join the cause, creating a ripple effect of support and innovation.
The return on investment from his contributions is undeniable: his $16 million in total donations has resulted in up to $137.6 million in savings for future health care and societal costs. His legacy isn’t just financial; it’s a powerful demonstration of how prevention and education can transform lives.
Allan’s commitment is etched into the very fabric of APPLE Schools, ensuring that every child impacted by the project benefits from his generosity and passion.

“Healthy eating and active living are the keys to a stronger future. It’s remarkable to see the smiles, love, and positive changes in schools that embrace the APPLE Schools program.”
